Schweitzer Fellows Program

Schweitzer Fellows ProgramSchweitzer Fellow Steve Ko, a medical student at Stanford University realized that in the underserved neighborhood of East Palo Alto most young children got their only really good meal of the day as part of the school lunch program. But what happened in the summer when school was out? To make sure that these children could start their days with a healthy meal, he partnered with the Ravenswood School District and the East Palo Alto YMCA to organize a summer feeding program. Over the course of 4 weeks, the program provided healthy breakfast and lunch meals daily to nearly 400 children. In Schweitzer Fellows Programaddition, they offered lunches to any families in the community who came to the site and at the end of each day they distributed all left-over food to the students and their family members. Steve also collaborated with the East Palo Alto public library to provide meals to family members of the 30 children enrolled in their summer enrichment program.

Schweitzer Fellows ProgramSteve is the living legacy of Albert Schweitzer, who once said "Example is not the main thing in influencing others. It is the only thing". In fact, Steve believes so strongly in helping the East Palo Alto neighborhood that he chooses to live there and participate in many community outreach projects.

Steve is just one of sixteen 2014-15 SF Bay Area Schweitzer Fellows who are incorporating powerful acts of community service into their academic programs at universities across the Bay Area. Before this Fellowship year is finished in May, 2015, they will have contributed more than 3000 hours of service to agencies in 6 Bay Area counties.

Please help us fund this incredible program that does so much for so many. All donations are fully tax deductible and your contribution of any size will allow us to welcome a new class of Fellows in 2015 and keep Schweitzer's dream alive.

Thank you for supporting our Fellows.
